BEST is embracing technology to improve its services and keep errant bus drivers in line. It will incorporate audit cameras in buses for passenger headcount while boarding and alighting, audit mobile apps for bus inspectors to monitor ticketless travellers as well as errant drivers, a driver’s console panel, encourage digital ticketing through smartcards, and a ‘tap-in, tap-out’ system for passenger fare payment across more buses in the city.
This was outlined in the latest budget proposal presented by the undertaking to BMC for approval on Thursday.
An official said that the technology for the headcount of passengers will also help cross-check ticket sales by conductors. “We will also get details on ticketless travellers and those travelling long distances with invalid tickets through the mobile app audits of bus inspectors,” the official said.
The inspectors will use the system to monitor reckless bus drivers and ensure appropriate deployment of buses on high traffic routes to minimise passenger waiting times at stops. “The app will also be used to notify the control room about lengthy queues at bus stops for immediate intervention,” the official said.
The driver’s console will comprise a panel in the vehicle displaying operational information and enabling various control functions.
The budget proposal indicated that BEST will expand tap-in, tap-out functionality across all electric buses, enabling commuters to utilise digital passes and smartcards for automated fare deduction upon entry and exit, with ticket issuance to passengers. The system is currently operational in select buses on a trial basis, the official said.
Meanwhile, in its budget proposal, BEST has allocated INR 975 crore to enhance island’s city power distribution network for 10.8 lakh consumers, including the laying of cables and smart meters, with INR 586 crore being provided through a central govt scheme. It will receive a subsidy of INR 900 per smart meter.
